After six months and 8,000 kilometres behind the wheel of the Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid, we've gained deep insights into what life is really like with Toyota's compact SUV in Singapore conditions. The verdict? This unassuming hybrid punches well above its weight.
Fuel economy has been nothing short of exceptional, averaging 22 km/L in mixed driving — a combination of peak-hour CTE crawls, weekend expressway runs, and the occasional trip up north. In purely urban driving, we've seen figures exceeding 24 km/L. At current fuel prices, that translates to significant savings over a comparable petrol-only SUV.
The hybrid system's seamless operation deserves special mention. Transitions between electric and petrol power are imperceptible, and the e-CVT gearbox — often criticised in other applications — works harmoniously with the hybrid powertrain. The ride quality, while firm, strikes a good balance between comfort and control on Singapore's varied road surfaces.
