As electric vehicle adoption accelerates in Singapore, prospective buyers face a complex web of costs that extend far beyond the sticker price. We crunched the numbers on charging, road tax, maintenance, and depreciation to determine what EV ownership really costs in Singapore in 2026.
Charging costs vary significantly depending on where and when you charge. Home charging via an SP Group wallbox costs approximately S$0.30/kWh, translating to roughly S$0.05/km for a typical EV. Public fast charging ranges from S$0.50-0.70/kWh. At current electricity tariffs, an EV covering 20,000km annually saves approximately S$2,000 in fuel costs compared to an equivalent petrol car.
Road tax for EVs has been reduced under the EV Early Adoption Incentive, with a typical family EV now costing S$1,100-1,500 annually — comparable to a 1.6-litre petrol car. Maintenance is significantly cheaper, with no oil changes, spark plugs, or timing belts to service. However, tyre wear can be higher due to instant electric torque.
