Volkswagen is preparing to launch a new hybrid four-door model. As expected, the cabin features separate screens for the instrument cluster and multimedia system, with a steering column stalk controlling the transmission.
The certification for the Volkswagen ID.Era 5S sedan appeared in the catalog of China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology at the end of May, after which the company itself revealed the exterior of the new model in official images. Now the interior has also been shown. For context, ID.Era is an entirely new lineup from the SAIC Volkswagen joint venture. The firstborn of the family was the large three-row crossover VW ID.Era 9X, with a five-seat SUV VW ID.Era 8X also on the way. These vehicles are specifically designed for China, taking into account the preferences of the local audience.
As expected, the sedan gets a standard multimedia system tablet, while the VW ID.Era 9X crossover already comes with a dual display as standard. A fairly large instrument display is positioned in front of the driver. Notably, in the sedan, both screens are "attached" to the minimalist dashboard. The Volkswagen ID.Era 5S also features a two-spoke steering wheel. There is no conventional gear selector; instead, a steering column stalk handles transmission control. On the center tunnel, there is a wireless charging pad and a pair of uncovered cupholders. Buyers will be able to choose between light or dark interior trim.
The exterior design of the four-door model is consistent with the crossovers. The sedan also features a smooth "nose," two-tier headlights, and a full-width taillight. Active shutters are located in the lower part of the front bumper. The turquoise ambient lighting indicates the presence of an autopilot system, although unlike the ID.Era family SUVs, the sedan does not have a lidar above the windshield.
The Volkswagen ID.Era 5S measures 4836 mm in length, 1880 mm in width, 1505 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2766 mm. The model is available with 17-, 18-, and 19-inch wheels.
The four-door is a plug-in hybrid. The ID.Era 5S powertrain includes a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated gasoline engine (109 hp) and a single electric motor producing 177 hp. Information about the battery is still unavailable. However, SAIC Volkswagen previously stated that the sedan can travel 160 km on electric power alone under the CLTC cycle, with a combined range of over 2000 km.

Meanwhile, overall, the Volkswagen Group's situation is, to put it mildly, not great. It has been reported that the company may close several factories in Europe.
