Ferrari has announced that its manual transmission is back… sort of. This is the new Ferrari 12Cilindri Manuale, a limited edition model of its V12 grand tourer that features a ‘manual-by-wire’ system.
Much of the 12Cilindri remains the same as always: 12 cylinders, two seats, grand tourer-spec ability and that rakish design that people either love or hate. But Maranello has introduced a new edition: the Manuale.
As the name implies, this is a manual transmission to play with – but it’s not as simple as that. The new 12Cilindri Manuale uses an all-new ‘manual-by-wire’ system that has been specifically developed for this car.
The Manuale model still uses an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, but Ferrari has developed a ‘manual control system’ that includes a clutch pedal and an open-gated shifter in the centre console. The driver can either use auto mode to engage all eight gears, or use six of the speeds as well as reverse with the gear shifter.
Ferrari says the technology is designed to allow the driver to ‘choose between driving engagement and comfort’, and uses a ‘clutch-by-wire’ system that can enable the manual shifts.
Maranello says just 1499 12Cilindri Manuale models will be made, designating the model a ‘limited series’ that is a link back to the first use of a V12 engine and its cubic capacity. Ferrari also adds that ‘it is designed for Ferraristi who are loyal to front-engined V12 two-seater berlinettas and seeking an even more physical level of driving emotions.’
