Jeep tries to convince everyone that the electric Compass 4xe is a real off-road vehicle

Jeep пытается всех убедить, что электрический Compass 4xe — настоящий внедорожник

The top-of-the-line 4xe version of the third-generation Jeep Compass crossover has entered the European market. In Germany, such a vehicle costs from 54,900 euros.

The third-generation Jeep Compass made its premiere in May 2025, based on the modular STLA Medium platform, with production established at the Stellantis plant in the Italian commune of Melfi. The all-wheel-drive Jeep Compass 4xe was first revealed in July 2025, but sales in Europe only began on June 23, 2026. All other versions of the third-generation Jeep Compass are front-wheel drive, offering two hybrid and two electric powertrains.

The Jeep Compass 4xe is equipped with a dual-motor electric powertrain: the front motor delivers 157 kW and 345 Nm, the rear motor delivers 132 kW and 232 Nm, with a maximum combined output of 276 kW (375 hp) and 577 Nm. Acceleration to 100 km/h takes 4.9 seconds, and the top speed is electronically limited to 180 km/h. The 400-volt battery has a capacity of 103 kWh, of which 96.1 kWh is usable, providing a maximum range of 606 km on a single charge according to the WLTP cycle. The maximum battery charging power is 160 kW (quite modest by modern standards).

Compared to other versions, the Compass 4xe features a ground clearance increased by 10 mm to 210 mm and a unique bumper design with tow hooks. The overall length of the Jeep Compass 4xe is 4587 mm, width is 1936 mm, height is 1667 mm, and the wheelbase is 2795 mm. Standard wheels are 19-inch. The approach angle is 28 degrees, departure angle is 31 degrees, ramp angle is 17 degrees, and the wading depth is 480 mm. The curb weight is 2252 kg excluding the driver.

Overall, the geometric off-road capability of the Compass 4xe is typically crossover-like, but Jeep's press office is trying to convince potential buyers that the new model is indeed an SUV. To this end, an impressive photo shoot from the dusty landscapes of Sardinia and a promotional video with the ambitious slogan "Goes anywhere — period" were released today.

The Jeep Compass 4xe's arsenal includes a reduction gearbox attached to the rear electric motor with a gear ratio of 14:1 (torque at the rear wheels can reach 3100 Nm) and five driving modes: Auto, Sport, Sand & Mud, Snow, and 4WD Lock. The 4WD Lock mode activates full power and continuous operation of both electric motors. The manufacturer also promises that the Jeep Compass 4xe can climb a 20% gradient even with zero front wheel traction.

Is all of the above enough to consider the Jeep Compass 4xe an SUV? For electric vehicles, there is currently no clear criterion distinguishing an SUV from a crossover (in the world of fuel-powered cars, one such criterion is the presence of a low-range gear in the transfer case), so Jeep has every right to call its new model an SUV. Whether this will help sales remains to be seen.
