At the end of last month, the fifth generation of the popular X5 crossover premiered, and now the company is preparing its most powerful version with the M badge. What will it look like?
The history of the X5 model began in 1999, when the first generation of the mid-size crossover with the factory index E53 debuted. Two years later, the lineup was expanded with the top-tier X5 4.6is modification, while a full-fledged M version only appeared in the second generation (E70). The current X5 M, based on the fourth-generation model, was introduced in 2019, and in early 2023, the SUV received a facelift.
Recently, spy photos of the future X5 M were published online, revealing quite significant differences from the regular fifth-generation X5 unveiled last week. The prototypes have completely different radiator grille "nostrils": they are almost the same shape as those on the current X5 M/X6 M. Meanwhile, the headlights also have a slightly different shape from the regular X5 and appear a bit narrower, though the signature X-shaped LED light graphics are expected to remain. The front bumper is still hidden under a thick layer of camouflage, so we have rendered it in the style of the brand's latest concept—the precursor to the future iM3 sedan. The rear section is also camouflaged, but here we can expect an original bumper with four exhaust pipes in the gasoline version (there will also be a top-tier electric variant).
The new BMW X5 debuted with five powertrain options, and among the power units, as recently confirmed, the 8-cylinder twin-turbo gasoline engine will remain. Next year, it will appear on the X5 M60 modification without any hybrid additions, and its power is expected to exceed 600 hp. Thus, the X5 M version should deliver even higher output. For comparison, the current M-crossover boasts 625 hp and 750 Nm of torque.
The premiere of the new BMW X5 M is expected closer to 2027. Meanwhile, sales of the new BMW i3 sedan began last month.
