According to preliminary data, a mid-size pickup truck from the German brand will appear on the American market closer to 2030.
Things have not been going very well for Volkswagen lately. Last month, the concern published sales data for new cars in the first half of 2026: the figure dropped by 6.3% to 4.1 million units. At the same time, the most noticeable decline was recorded in China, where sales plunged by 25.9% (to 973,000 units). Earlier, the manufacturer spoke about an anti-crisis plan that includes, among other things, staff reductions.
In addition, the concern's strategy for emerging from the crisis involves the development and production of new models, as well as the exploration of new niches and markets. According to the German publication Handelsblatt, VW is reworking its development plan for the American market in order to increase its share (currently around 4%). Apparently, the manufacturer is still preparing to try its luck in one of the actively developing segments in the States.
This refers to mid-size pickups: it is expected that Volkswagen could set up production of a corresponding model at its American plant (which would avoid paying high import duties and make the price tag more attractive to customers). According to the publication, the new model could enter the US auto market closer to 2030.
Production of VW pickups will likely be set up at the plant in Chattanooga (Tennessee, USA). Let us recall that the capacity of this site was prematurely freed up by the fully electric crossover ID.4, which was retired in the States in the spring of 2026. It is worth noting that the company previously promised to return the "green" crossover to the American market, but only after a refresh and under the name ID. Tiguan.
Foreign media believe that developing such a new model from scratch could prove too expensive for Volkswagen, which is in crisis. So there is a chance that the manufacturer will use a partnership project, possibly implemented jointly with Ford. As we remember, the brands currently have twin mid-size pickups. Moreover, the third-generation Ford Ranger, developed by the Australian office as part of this project, is currently offered in the US as well. Meanwhile, its closest relative – the "second" Volkswagen Amarok – was not planned for introduction to this market.
There is a possibility (of course, not officially confirmed) that Volkswagen will want to create a twin of Ford's new mid-size pickup, which the American brand recently officially announced. It is known that this new model will be called Fathom and will feature a fully electric powertrain, details of which will be revealed later.
Ford dealers will begin accepting orders for the Fathom in early 2027. The starting price of the upcoming pickup is already known – $28,350, which is equivalent to approximately 2.34 million rubles at the current exchange rate. Including the delivery fee, the price rises to $29,945 (about 2.47 million rubles).
